Top buys in 2006 Romania: telephone plans, aspirators and stoves

Romanians bought in 2006 much more long-term consumption goods as compared to the similar period the year before, according to the National Statistics Institute. The top buys in this period include telephone subscriptions, vacuum cleaners and stoves. The most impressive boost was reported by phone subscriptions, which rose 30.7% as compared to 2005. Moreover, Romanians purchased 7.7% more cars than the in 2005. According to statistics, the number of purchased home appliances also grew last year: the number of purchased vacuum cleaners grew by 11.9% while that of stoves grew by 11.3%.

Beyonce in Romania for concert in Cluj

American R&B singer Beyonce will perform her first concert in Romania in the city of Cluj this week. Beyonce arrived in Bucharest on Sunday night and departed for the central north-western city of Cluj on Monday morning. According to Realitatea TV, the whole team is transported to Cluj by three airplanes: one for the singer and crew; another for the equipments and another one for technicians. Beyonce’s team totals just about 60 people - technicians, musicians, instrumentalists and dancers. The artist will attend a press conference at 1 pm and the show is scheduled to begin at 8 pm.

Three-day cold weather warning for half of Romania as first snow falls

Romanian meteorologists announced on Sunday that the first three days of this week would bring heavy rain and strong wind in most of the regions while the first snow this autumn last weekend will keep falling in the mountains. On Saturday and Sunday, the snow already reached several centimeters and caused serious traffic jams in several areas, according to Romanian monitoring agency Rador. Several tourists were evacuated from mountain chalets where some were trapped. Up in the mountains, the snow level reached 13 centimeters while the minimum temperature registered last night stood at -16 degrees Celsius.

Survey puts Democrats first, Liberals last in race for elections

The main backers of Romanian President Traian Basescu, the Democratic Party (PD) would get 42% of the vote if parliamentary elections would take place next Sunday, followed by the main opposition party, the Social Democrats (PSD) with 19% and the governing Liberals, with 13%, according to a study by Romanian pollster INSOMAR. While the populist New Generation Party (PNG), the far-right Greater Romania Party (PRM) and the Hungarian Demcrats (UDMR) would reach the 5% threshold to enter Parliament, the Conservatives (PC) and Liberal Democrats (PLD) would fail to, reveals INSOMAR, quoted by Romanian monitoring agency Rador. PNG, a party led by populist businessman-politician Gigi Becali, owner of Steaua Bucharest football club, loses considerable ground from previous polls, a trend blamed on recent scandals between Becali and ex-Steaua coach Gica Hagi that have split the public opinion in the country. When it comes to trust in politicians, Romanian President Traian Basescu enjoys a 53% level of trust, followed by Theodor Stolojan with 30%, Gigi Becali with 25%, Democratic Party leader Emil Boc with 24% and Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu with 22%.

Romanian boxer Bute new world champion

Romanian boxer Lucian Bute won the world championship title after beating Columbian Alejandro Berrio in Montreal on Friday to Saturday night. After the game, Bute thanked Romanians who woke up late in the night to see the match and addressed some words to his family. The two fighters are the proponents of different styles: if Bute has an elaborated, intelligent style, Berrio is a boxer who loves to fight head on.
