Romanian TV group refuses preliminary RTL offer of 400 million euro

ImageA reputed Romanian journalist says on his blog on Tuesday that one of Romania's major media groups, Intact - to which his sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor belongs - has refused a preliminary offer of 400 million euro proposed by RTL for the takeover Antena 1 TV and other channels, except for Antena 3 TV.
Intact would rather sell them for 700 million euro, blogger Catalin Tolontan, who heads Gazeta Sporturilor, says on his blog.

Intact belongs to the family of Dan Voiculescu, the leader of Romania's Conservative Party (PC). The group runs major general interest TV station Antena 1, TV news channel Antena 3, top selling compact newspaper Jurnalul National, top selling sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor, business weekly Saptamana Financiara as well as several other media outlets.

Information has been circulating in media circles for a year about negotiations between Intact and RTL Bertelsmann but no official confirmation was released.

 
Romania telecom operators Orange, Vodafone suspected of oligopoly

Competition on the Romanian telecom market is weak and there and factors indicating a collective dominance of the two main operators in the country, Vodafone and Orange, a study of the Romanian telecom market regulator ANRCTI says.
Official representatives told HotNews.ro that they would set up a market analysis and then they would take the necessary actions. On the other hand, company representatives argue that the Romanian market is highly competitive.

The conclusions belong to a study ran by ANRCTI in collaboration with consulting company TASC Strategic Consulting. The authors only presented the general findings, avoiding going into more sensitive details. The analysis is aimed at contributing to set up of the first regulating strategy in the telecom sector.


Vodafone and Orange representatives argue that the market is competitive enough and sustain that all the aspects need to be taken into consideration, like the huge investments made so far in the country.
Orange Romania head Thierry Millet says that the issue can be debated any moment but on real facts.

He argued that Orange invested some 1.2 billion euro in the country and that there are another four telecom operators on the market.
A similar stand was taken by the General Director of Vodafone, Ian Gray who argues that the presence of their company in Romania lead to serious investments in infrastructure facilities and not only.



 
Boromir registers 11 times higher net income

ImageBoromir Ramnicu Valcea, one of the milling and bakery industry's leading players (on a market worth approximately 1.5 billion euros) saw its net profit increase by 11 times in the first nine months of this year, against profit registered for the whole of 2006, which was largely aided by the sale of a piece of land in Sibiu.

"The profit derived in the first nine months of this year resulted from the sale of land, on which the Amylon plant was formerly located, as well as an increase in the price of traded shares," said Constantin Boromiz, general manager and Boromir shareholder.

Shocking: Romanian Boxing team dissolved

The poor results of the Romanian boxers in the last World Championship edition in Chicago and the recent incident in which three boxers from the national were found stealing from a local store lead to the dissolution of the national boxing team.
In an urgent meeting, the leaders of the Romanian Boxing Federation decided to dissolve the national Olympic team and to fire the technical coaches, Relu Auras and Emil Popa.

From now on, the boxers will train in three regional centers until the management will find a solution designed to revive the game.
Three boxers accused of theft in Chicago were excluded for life from the sport. The boxers declared at their turn that they are innocent and that everything as a poor misunderstanding.

 
22% of Romanians watch their TV four hours per day

A survey conducted by the public opinion polling company CURS reveals that Romanians watch TV for the news, movies, sports and soap operas shows.

The survey, designed to reveal the way media influences the electoral behavior of the Romanians shows that 24% of them watch TV programs for 2 to 3 hours a day while 22% of the population watch TV 4 hours a day.

According to the survey, 73% of the Romanians never use the internet while 8% of them use it rarely.

When asked what information they are interested in, 28% of the respondents declare they prefer political declarations while 22% of them prefer information on social issues.

The survey reveals that Romanians trust the news broadcast by PRO TV, Antena 1 and the public television station, TVR.

Some 13% of the respondents consider that the Public Television and Pro TV are most objective. On the other hand, the most subjective to political influence is Antena 1 and Realitatea TV with 7%.
